BMW R1100RS
|
First came the rumors, then the spy shots, then official factory pictures and details of the all new R259 engine. This engine had a lot resting on it, as it was the first complete redesign of the boxer engine. The first machine to appear with this engine was the R1100RS. BMW handed out several long term test models to the press, and it was hammered around the Country to test its characteristics. BMW's confidence was well warranted, and it came through with style. The engine was housed in an all new chasis, featuring a 'Telelever' front end and adjustable handlebars and seat. Ergonomic considerations were clearly very important to BMW. The class of this machine was evident from the beginning, and it had a very high price tag to match. Since its introduction, changes have been few, but it has been koined by several other models utilizing the same engine. All in all, a very well thought out machine, and a credit to the design team at BMW.
Power in 1993 was 80bhp@7000rpm, with torque of 65.2@5500. Wet weight was 556lb's.
