| Each Manufacturer regards the 'fastest production streetbike' honors as a worthy goal. Of the Japanese, only Yamaha currently doesn't offer a machine vying for top speed domination (as of 2000). In 1997, the Honda CBR1100XX was the only game in town, with top speed pushing 180mph! As well as providing plenty of brute horsepower, Honda gave the 'XX' some very slippery bodywork, with a drag coefficient purportedly better than the NSR250 racer. Pure top speed was not the only design goal... smoothness, handling and comfort were also high on the list. Honda drew knowledge from other cutting edge machines in their lineup when designing the 'XX'. The CBR series bikes were the primary contributors. The triple box section twin spar aluminum frame and aerodynamic front fender derive from the CBR900RR. Ergonomics are remarkably roomy and comfortable, and dual counterbalancers in the engine make it incredibly smooth. With the Honda linked braking system and many refined features, the 'XX' is a very sophisticated machine. Power in 1997 peaked at 134.8@9,500rpm, with torque of 79.1@7,500rpm. Wet weight was 561lb's. |
