HONDA GL1000, 1974-76
|
|
This was the Wing that spawned such successful offspring. The original was a flat four cylinder, with vertically split crankcases, rubber cam drive belts and a fuel pump. It's design did not bear any similarities to any previous Honda's. In 1975 the GL was 'naked', with later versions benefitting from fairings and luggage systems. Shaft drive was a necessity in the design process, along with a large tank (for maximum range) and top of the line comfort. The engine was very quiet, which actually caused some concern. The rider could barely 'feel' the engine. Performance was quite spirited, and the twin front discs did a good job of stopping the machine. Suspension was not really up to the task however, which somewhat tarnished the machines' overall character. Wet weight was 807lb's.
