HONDA VF700/750, 1983-1985
Mike Baldwin rode a V4 1000cc Honda to victory in the 1982 Daytona 200, proving the prowess of Honda's V4 engine. The AMA reduced the capacity limit for Superbikes from 1000cc to 750cc for 1983, hence the introduction of the V45 Interceptor. Naturally they were also hoping for some sales of their top of the line sport machine. In 1983 none of the other manufacturers could touch it. In late 1984 Honda introduced the VF700F, to avoid the high rate tariffs on 750's. It was the same machine (with a shorter stroke), but with slightly lower performance figures. There were many reports of cam problems with the early Honda V4 engines, which did plague the reputation of VF's of the era, and to some extent the VFR's that followed. In 1984, the VF750F made 77.36bhp, as opposed to the 700's 66.8. Torque for the 750 was 45.09, the 700's was 40.31. Wet weight was 543lb's.
